Garrison Student Prepares for an Career as an Architect
The amount of forethought, precision, and research required to plan a career or be an architect lead one lucky 8th grader from Garrison Middle School on a unique journey. GEAR UP's annual 8th grade showcase was another opportunity for students to research, explore, and discover the ins and outs of their future careers. All 8th grade students began with a career interest survey online, that matches their interests to careers that are suited for their personality. It allowed those who did not have a career in mind to begin the exploration process, while it permitted those who had a career picked out a chance to evaluate their reasoning behind the choice. I have been preaching to students that your success in specific areas of your life is directly related to their interest and desire in regards to that area.
Joshua Chavez is a future architect who is extremely interested in all the aspects of architecture, it was that interested that prompted the research and design of Garrison’s winning 8th grade career presentation. Josh is a current 8th grade HOH3 and AVID student who participated and competed against over 200 total 8th graders at Garrison. After he earned that honor, Josh moved on to the Annual GEAR UP Career Showcase dinner and presentations at WSU Tri-Cities with his mother, father, and older brother. From there the winners from all 24 middle schools that receive WSU GEAR UP’s Harvest of Hope III grant, were recognized for their achievement as they competed against one another.
Josh arrived nervous as his anxiety had been building for his presentation in front of peers and complete strangers. As the evening’s events unfolded, Josh took note of his peers who had already presented and took a deep breathe before giving an informative and concise presentation architecture. Although he did not walk away with first place, he walked away with prizes as well as the recognition from staff and most importantly his family. “We are proud of you” is the last words spoken to Josh by his father as the family departs through the campus doors.
