Prosser Student Success Stories

Last year, GEAR UP tutors targeted 7th and 8th graders for Math Labs. Thomas Hunt is one student who was referred by his math teacher. Initially, he did not like coming and would not show up. Reluctantly, he did and his grades improved. This year we have the honor to work with him again in both Math Lab and his Math class. Previously, he did not ask questions nor participate. This year he wants to be in the labs and isn’t afraid to ask questions of his teacher or tutor. Thomas knows that with the right help he will do great in Math.

Christian Rivera is one of our Spanish speaking students who is breaking barriers. He migrated from Mexico. He has struggled with English since he arrived, but has always worked hard. I met Christian during our GEAR UP career week last year during spring break. He came every day to work on his presentation. He was determined to work hard and get the presentation done. Before GEAR UP, no one had talked to Christian about colleges and financial aid.  As an 8th grader he earned A’s and B’s in his classes. One of his biggest achievements was applying and interviewing for AVID. The knowledge of interviewing and applying in English did not discourage him.  Christian interviewed and was accepted to AVID. As a freshman, he is a great example of someone who is overcoming language barriers to achieve his dreams. He is always prepared and ready to learn.  We wish both of these students the best in their education.
