5th Annual PHS College Night!

The Next Generation club, Prosser High GEAR UP and WA State Migrant Council teamed up to bring Washington State college/university reps to the annual PHS college fair.

As school let out on Friday Nov 22nd, Next Generation set-up students mobilized in the MPR, decorating and setting up tables and chairs.  Next the students continued in the hallways, emptying three classrooms of tables and chairs. These tables were given a number and relocated in the hallways. Several young men, including Gerald Lemmon, a freshman, helped. Gerald knew which desks belonged to which teachers which proved helpful after the program.

At about 430, the college reps began to arrive. Students had lists that gave each college rep a number. Students worked from the time they got out of school to just before 5, when they sat down for dinner. The catered meal, consisted of mexican entrees-very delicious!

The doors opened at 5pm for the community. Our GEAR UP tutors collected surveys and provided information to the students and parents of GEAR UP services at both the middle school and high school.

After 6 pm, students from Next Generation dance team performed several Mexican Folk dances in the MPR. The dances and dress of the students was festive!

At 630 pm, the event continued in the main gym. Mr. George Mendoza, Morrow County Assistant Superintendent, addressed and connected with the audience.

Next Generation dance team presented the final two dance numbers of the evening. Eduardo Hernandez, a freshman participated in one of the numbers. Eduardo is an enthusiastic student who is learning English. He is in college bound and is involved in sports. In between and after the dances, items were raffled to the audience. Items raffled included mascot items and gifts from local merchants.

The Next Generations’ club focus is to make higher ed resources available to students. The students chose from the following committees; setup/tear down, runners, greeters, and dance team.  For pictures, go to Prosser School District photos at early outreach website.

Those freshman that attended received a ticket good for a pizza party on Dec 6. GEAR UP Prosser and Paterson are teaming up for a monthly social at PHS!
