Welcome to WSU Early Outreach
On Friday, June 6th 63 GEAR UP seniors filed into the River View HS lecture hall to prepare for the next step in their lives-graduate from high school and find their place in the world. Students arrived with parents, immediate and extended family, and were supported by the entire Finley community.
Commencement began at 7pm sharp. River View Principal Bryan Long emceed the event along with support of Lance Hahn Superintendent. Enlisting military students were recognized: Josh Smith, Salma Garcia Aguilar, Chance Simpson, Trela Garner, and Luis Martinez. Next recognition went to the hard working academic students that received honors diplomas: Cody Hand, Kaylee Lozier, and Britney Salter.
Michelle Klejeski gave an excellent and inspiring valedictorian speech to her class followed by her salutatorian Jayme Walker. The class favorite was Matt Morton who decided to go the comical anecdotal route to get his peers loosened up. The entire class compiled a video to show with their baby photos and senior pictures. Deputy Joe Lusignan was not able to attend so he was shown on the big screen via a video he made days prior to graduation. The final speaker before diplomas were announced was River View math teacher Kent Johnson. Kent expressed supportive inspiring thoughts and well wishes to each of the seniors.
18 graduates are going onto 4 year universities all over the country, 25 students have declared going to community college, most to Columbia Basin College. Overall, 68% of the graduating class is going onto post-secondary education which is the highest percent of all of the graduating GEAR UP classes to date (3 total GEAR UP classes have graduated from River View).
Thank you to the Finley School District for your partnership with the GEAR UP grant. These students reflect the best of the Finley community and will go onto to do big things!
