Welcome to WSU Early Outreach
GEAR UP in partnership with Finley Middle School, River View High School, and River View ASB put on a brand new 8th grade transition event for cohort students. Students participated in a freshman preparatory all day event called “GEARing UP for River View High.” GEAR UP has traditionally helped in hosting the freshman orientation the day before the first day of school. This year, something new and innovative was organized where students were able to get a full day of what it will be like to be a Panther, before their 8th grade year even finished!
The day started off with issuing students a cohort t-shirt displaying the WSU GEAR UP logo and their graduation year. All 8th students were matching in their bright orange t-shirts throughout the building and on their mini field trip to the high school at the end of the day. Students had an opportunity to play River View trivia at lunch for candy and various college prizes donated from area schools. Irene Cuevas was recognized for her participation in the career showcase in April and Teresa Rojas Barrera for being selected as March’s National AVID Superstar!
River View ASB officers, club officers, and athletic leaders put on a half hour assembly covering all extracurricular and academic offerings that students will have at their fingertips by the time they become freshman. Students had the opportunity to ask the upper classman questions at the end of their presentation.
The last event for the 8th graders transition day was a field trip to River View High. Students filed into the lecture hall, where they were greeted by Lupe Mota and Gaby Rodriguez. These GEAR UP employees organized an interactive college and future career planning activity for students. They were able to open up dialogue about students’ future plans, setting goals, and where these students envision themselves 5-10 years into the future. Students were receptive to the message that the GEAR UP employees were trying to drive home; set and maintain goals to benefit your future, no matter what that looks like for each individual student!
