Welcome to WSU Early Outreach
GEAR UP staff members worked hard to celebrate and make September 23rd to the 27th a fun-filled week for both students and staff. The halls were scattered with Washington college tidbit posters, students and staff proudly wore their favorite college attire, and dreams were shaped at Kiona-Benton High School during National GEAR UP Week.
One successful activity was the ‘Who Went Where?’ poster. Teachers and administration sent in their information to GEAR UP including what college they graduated from, their degree, and favorite college memory. GEAR UP made profiles of each participating staff member and students had to guess where Ki-Be staff members went to college. It proved to be a great opportunity for students to ask their teachers where they went to college and continue the dialogue for college plans.
GEAR UP also put up a ‘Wall of Dreams’ where students wrote down which college they would like to attend. They were encouraged to write their career choice, what inspired them to go to college, and their goals for the future. The students autographed their dreams and displayed them for the whole school to read.
GEAR UP also had the opportunity to partner up with Mrs. Flanagan’s Current World Problems (CWP) class and seniors wrote letters to their government officials thanking them and informing them of the impact GEAR UP has had at their school. Students learned first-hand how to articulately express themselves in a formal manner.
Staff members at Ki-Be were extremely supportive of the activities that took place during GEAR UP week. It was a great way to kick off the new school year. We are looking forward to next year’s National GEAR UP week and making it bigger and better at Ki-Be!
