Prosser High Freshman Class

Prosser Mustangs Ready and Excited! Prosser GEAR UP began the year at freshman transition night in August for incoming students/parents.  Workshops provided students the tools and expectations to be successful in high school from the first day!  The workshops included assistance in Time Management/Priorities, Student Resources, along with help with Credits/Grades/Edline.  150 students plus families showed, heard presentations by various faculty and had pizza.

On Thursday, August 29, tutors came on board.  Four tutors will work at the middle/high schools:

Here are mini-bios from our tutors:

Hello, my name is Silvia Razo and I have a daughter, Evelyn, who is a year old. I have attended the Grandview School District and received my diploma in 2009 at Grandview High School. I began college at Yakima Valley Community College in January 2010 and hoping to receive my Associate's Degree in June 2014. I plan on continuing my education in hopes of becoming an Elementary teacher someday. In life, I have realized that education is an important aspect that everyone should attain. My mother was once a teacher in Mexico and she has set a wonderful example of how important education is. Along with that, I come from a family of eight (four brothers and three sisters) including myself. I have learned from my family that giving up is never an option. Everyone should always follow their dreams and give it their best on whatever they choose to do. That is why I have chosen to be a GEAR UP tutor because I want to make a positive impact on students'  lives. I feel that being a college student, a young mother, and coming from a big family that I have the experience and the personality needed to help students continue their education and arrive to their desired career. Education is the way to go!

Hi, My Name is Vanessa and I was born and raised in Sunnyside, WA. I come from a family of three, including myself and two brothers. Also, the first in my family to attend college. I am currently attending YVCC in Grandview and pursuing to major in Physical Therapy. Out of all all Tutors I am the youngest and the newest member of GEAR UP. I am very artistic, anything that involves music, inspires me. I love my job as a Math Tutor it has been an honor to inspire students to reach for dreams and goals for the future.

Well my name is Araceli Fuentes. I went to school in Prosser and graduated from high school in 2009. After high school I went to CBC then transferred to WSU Pullman. I wasn't very happy there so I decided to come back home. I started working for GEAR UP at Housel. I took last year off from going to school and had two jobs for awhile, transferred to GEAR UP at Chiawana due to my second job being there. Then, I came back to Prosser after I left my second job.  I love animals and nature. I like being outside. I'm majoring in DTC (digital technology and culture) at WSU TC.  I have a dog named Rosi. I've been in a relationship for over 2 and a half years. My boyfriend likes the Seahawks so I have to like the Seahawks too (haha).  I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I like to go white water rafting, hiking, zip-lining, play volleyball, snowboard, and watch movies.

On Friday, Sept 6, Prosser High upper class and staff hosted the annual “Freshman camp”.  The day began with Freshman being dismissed from their first period classes to the gym.  At the gym, Prosser High principal, Kevin Lusk gave an introduction to Freshman camp.  Freshman camp moved to Art Fiker Stadium, where some of the upper class leaders were ecstatic!

The rest of the day consisted of games at the stadium, lunch, creating memories at Princess theatre and a closing assembly.  At the Princess theatre, the freshman saw skits that modeled appropriate behavior.  They were also invited to a tailgate party at the first football game that night.  Finally they were invited to participate in clubs on campus.  Here’s to a great 2013-14 school year!
